Former railroad control centerClattering Machines instead of Popping Corks at NOMOS
The heavy trucks that parked for days in front of the former train station in Glashütte were a small attraction for the area. The head office of NOMOS Glashütte is here, together with administration and production. However, the manufactory NOMOS doesn’t just own the station, it has also recently acquired the former railroad control center, including the arcade passages. The trucks brought new precision instruments for manufacturing the wheels and pinions of the watches. The turnery, which is responsible for all the tiny studs and pillars needed for a watch, has moved into the arcades and acquired two new automatic long-turning lathes.
Almost all the precision pieces that make up a NOMOS-watch are now manufactured here by the employees. It is understandable that the precision engineers don’t have time right now for celebrating. The new manufacturing opportunities give NOMOS additional independence and more influence on the accuracy of the pieces for the prize-winning Tangente and for its other models: Tangomat, Orion, Club, Ludwig and Tetra, which have also received awards.
Four watchmakers and design engineers in the Research and Development Department plan fulltime what could still be manufactured. During the past ten years they have invented such things as the extra flat date mechanism, which is unique to NOMOS. It is patented, as is the power reserve indicator, which they designed. They developed a particular automatic caliber and built movements for Wempe: one with a tourbillon and another with a duplex barrel. We can expect more from them, which is why they are getting new premises and instruments. They will work on continually improving the existing caliber and on NOMOS-innovations in the former railroad signal tower, located one storey above the plant floor. And they will celebrate with their colleagues at some stage, but there is no time just now.
