Special Exhibition "Glashütte in the GRD era" German Watch Museum: Watch production between 1951 and 1990

25 years after the German reunification, the German Watch Museum Glashütte honors the achievements of the former Glashütte designers, watchmakers, toolmakers and precision mechanics with a special exhibition. Despite the often difficult circumstances, they managed to keep the tradition of watchmaking alive during the GDR era.

June 5, 2014 saw the opening of a special exhibition at the German Watch Museum Glashütte, entitled “Glashütte Cottage Industry: A Flourishing Supply System”. More than eighty guests from the region’s political and business communities, representatives of the city of Glashütte and its watchmakers, witnesses to the history of watchmaking, lenders and watch connoisseurs from all over Germany followed the invitation of the museum.

A traditional topping-out ceremony took place at the construction site of the German Watch Museum Glashütte on June 28, 2007, celebrating the end of another important construction phase. After clearing away one complete floor and completing a new attic, the point has now been reached where the historical state of the building can once again be attained.

On March 14, Glashütte Original invited workers to a traditional “building celebration” in order to mark the end of the first construction phase and to thank all of those involved for their efforts. Because of the mild winter, the demolition work, the gutting of the building’s interior as well as the foundation draining proceeded rapidly and were completed on time.

Historical Establishment of the German Watch Museum Glashütte

The gonging of a vintage Glashütte grandfather clock by Karl W. Höhnel at exactly 12:00 on March 16, 2006, in the Glashütte Original manufactory’s atrium marked the historical establishment of the German Watch Museum Glashütte - Nicolas G. Hayek foundation. For this occasion, CEO of Swatch Group AG, Nick Hayek, jr., journeyed from Switzerland to join local mayor Frank Reichel and Glashütte Original’s managing director Dr. Frank Müller to seal the foundation’s establishment by signing the official paperwork.
