Made in Germany – Perspektive FellowshipGlashütte Original and Berlinale launch award for young German directors

Glashütte Original, the high-end German watchmaker and Co-Partner of the Berlin International Film Festival, has reinforced its commitment to excellence in German craft and culture by funding an annual 15,000 Euro fellowship for young German film directors, to be known as the “Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship” award.

Every year, the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section of the Berlinale presents a selection of new films by young German directors. The new prize, funded entirely by Glashütte Original, is intended to support emerging German directors working on a new film project and screenplay.

The winner of the annual €15,000 prize will be selected from the participants in the previous year’s edition of the Perspektive Deutsches Kino. All of the directors who presented a film in the Perspektive 2011 are entitled to apply for this first edition of the Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship award. German watchmaker Glashütte Original, Co-Partner of the Berlinale since 2011, is committed to supporting the next generation of German filmmakers.

The firm has taken the Perspektive motto literally and opened up a new perspective for emerging directors. The “Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship” will be presented for the first time at a ceremony to be held during the 62nd Berlinale, set to take place February 9 -19, 2012.

Dieter Kosslick, Director of the Berlin International Film Festival, commented, „Again it is a matter of sustainability: we must put emerging talent to work and provide support for follow-on projects. Fortunately we will now be able to make this possible together with Glashütte Original.”

The Perspektive Directors Fellowship Jury

Directors wishing to apply for “Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship” 2012 must submit a treatment by October 1, 2011. The treatment will be reviewed by a three-member jury, all of whom are closely associated with the Berlinale and eager to support next-generation German filmmakers.

The Jury members are:

Thomas Arslan

Director and screenwriter Thomas Arslan is considered one of Germany’s most interesting directors. He first caught the public eye with his film trilogy dealing with the everyday life of persons of Turkish descent in Berlin. The second film in this series, Dealer, was presented in the Forum section of the Berlinale 1999 and won both the FIPRESCI and the Ecumenical Jury prizes. In 2007, his chamber play-like family drama Ferien (Holidays) featured in the Panorama section, and in 2010 Arslan‘s Im Schatten, a genre film composed with cool precision, was shown in the Forum.

Anna Brüggemann

Actress Anna Brüggemann can be seen in many German films of recent years, in particular those by interesting next-generation directors. Together with her brother Dietrich she wrote the screenplay for Neun Szenen (Nine Scenes, directed by Dietrich Brüggemann), which was shown in 2006 in the Perspektive section and garnered the Studio Hamburg Nachwuchspreis (a prize for upand- coming talent) for the best screenplay. She also co-wrote the screenplay and played the main role in the humorous Renn, wenn Du kannst (Run, If You Can, directed by Dietrich Brüggemann), which was shown in the Perspektive 2010 and won a number of prizes.

Gian-Piero Ringel

Producer Gian-Piero Ringel studied at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin and since 2008 has served as managing director of Road Movies, the production company founded by Wim Wenders. Gian-Piero Ringel has already produced two films by Wenders, Palermo Shooting (Cannes 2008) and Pina (presented in the Competition section of the Berlinale 2011). He has also served as co-producer for a variety of international productions, including Unfair World, recently shown at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
