Rado Star Prize Austria 2015Rainer Mutsch and his installation «Pulse»

The Rado Star Prize Austria 2015 has entered its final round! Austrian designer Rainer Mutsch is now presenting his installation “Pulse”, which deals with the definition of time. A stylized quartz crystal continuously radiates pulsating light which then becomes visible on the object’s surface as a unit of time.

From January to August 2015, selected designers are presenting their projects in the window of the Rado Boutique. In October of this year, Rado Star Prize Austria 2015 will be awarded for the most innovative, visionary idea.

“Pulse” consists of a milled block of marble with vertically arranged vents on its surface. “This object stands for permanence and infinity. It’s a visualization of the path of infinity to the construct of time as defined by humans,” states creator Mutsch. Light pulsates at defined intervals from the middle of the stone, escaping through the vertical slits milled into its surface. The result is a transformation from an abstract oscillation to a readable unit of time. Crafted from a single piece of marble, “Pulse” was created with a six-axle CNC mill in cooperation with the Breitweiser Stone company.

Mutsch’s works are defined by intensive explorations of new materials and production techniques as well as by questioning existing typologies. Mutsch completed his studies in Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 2007 he founded his own industrial design agency in Vienna, which focuses on furniture and lighting. Mutsch’s designs have already won prestigious awards such as the Red Dot Design Award, the Good Design Award and the Green Good Design Award.

With the Rado Star Prize, Rado invites talented designers to practise its brand’s credo of making the imaginable real. The winner will receive € 5,000 prize money and the opportunity to present the winning installation in the window of the Rado Boutique in Vienna City during Vienna Design Week 2015. The installation “Pulse” by Rainer Mutsch can be visited from August 14 – 31 at Kärntner Straße 18 in Vienna.
