A contribution of eight highly talented young watchmakers F. A. Lange Scholarship & Watchmaking Excellence Award 2011

To celebrate the 165th anniversary of the founding of the fine watchmaking industry in Saxony by Ferdinand A. Lange, the traditional Saxon watch manufactory last year initiated the “F. A. Lange Scholarship & Watchmaking Excellence Award” project. The company was keen in its anniversary year to make a contribution towards the promotion of young talents in the field of watchmaking.

In a combination of summer academy and competition eight highly talented young watchmakers from all over the world were able to gain inspirations from the world of chronometry and put their skills to the test.

The successful project will be continued this year. The event consists of two parts that complement each other. In an initial “F.A. Lange Scholarship” workshop from 8 to 12 August 2011 the prospective watchmakers will obtain valuable insights into the fine art of precision watchmaking. On the last day they will be told what the competition task involves. They then have u ntil the end of October to come up with a design solution. The submitted entries will be judged by an expert jury and the prize will be awarded on 7 December 2011, the foundation day of the company. The prize consists of a grant of 10,000 Euro for advanced studies in the field of watchmaking.

Entry forms for the competition have been sent out to more than 30 watchmaking schools all over the world. Other schools that would like to take part in this exceptional project can request application forms up until 15 May 2011 from press@lange-soehne.com. The competition is aimed at students in their penultimate year (i.e. graduating in 2012). The maximum age is 25 years. During their training the students should have performed outstanding work, possess exceptional design creativity and be able to complete a demanding project independently.
